Cetaqua integrates, manages and executes research projects aimed at proposing innovative solutions to companies, society and the administrations to solve environmental and technological problems linked to management of the complete water cycle. The founding partners of Cetaqua are: Aguas de Barcelona (AGBAR), UniversitatPolitècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

The main objective of Cetaqua is to contribute to research and development of technologies related to the complete water cycle, promoting synergies between companies, research centres and universities.

Additional efforts are directed to provide research and development support and experience to the public and private sector; to strengthening cooperation to improve the development activity in RTD in time, cost and quality, by cooperation with other partners; and increasing the collaboration with third organizations related to the water businesses, including the private and the public sector. The main areas of activities of the centre are the alternative water resources, as desalination and reuse; crisis management (floods and droughts) and global change; advanced water treatments; sludge management and odour control; operational cost management; and implementation efforts on the compliance of the water framework directivedevelopment.



The Agbar Water Group (Agbar) brings together more than 160 companies and 20,000 employees in businesses directly related to water management. This includes catchment, transport, treatment and distribution of drinking water, as well as collection, treatment, reuse and return of wastewater to the natural environment with the minimum environmental impact.

Agbar is one of the biggest companies in global water management, with a 52% share of the private water management market in Spain. It is also the foreign group with the biggest market share in Latin America.




The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) is a local authority created under de Catalan Law in order to provide community services to 36 municipalities around Barcelona, an area with a high density of population with more than 3,100,000 inhabitants living in less than 600 km2.

The environmental competencies of AMB include de management of the water cycle: drinking water supplies, sanitation systems, wastewater treatments and reclaimed water. Other functions are the definition and implementation of the metropolitan urban waste management programs.



Archroma AG is a global specialty chemicals company, headquartered in Muttenz, Switzerland.In Spain the company has four production facilities located in Prat de Llobregat, Castellbisbal, Tarragona and SantAndreu de la Barca. The main activities of the Archrom subsidiary located in El Prat de Llobregat are the synthesis of dyestuffs and pigments optical brighteners, pigments preparations and chemical products for paper, textile and leather business mainly. Thanks to its know-how, experience and capacity for innovation, Archrom subsidiary from Prat de Llobregat has been recognized as “global centers of excellence”.

Archromattaches a high priority to sustainable business actions, in terms of the environment, society, and employees. The company has defined concrete goals for the period ending in 2020: to reduce energy consumption in the Archrom Group by 30% as well as to reduce CO2 emissions and waste accumulation by 45% each compared with 2005 levels.

The Archroma subsidiary from Prat de Llobregat is located close to one of the largest waste water reclamation plant (WWRP) in Southern Europe (DEPURBAIX).Archrom´s interest is to re-use the effluent water of the waste water treatment plant, meeting this way with the company´s environmental goals.



ECOLÓGICA IBÉRICA Y MEDITERRÁNEA is a company dedicated to the management and treatment of marine fuel waste (marpol) and industrial residues. TRADEBE has an operative plant in Flammables Dock located in Port of Barcelona. TRADEBE has dedicated its efforts to continuously improve its treatment processes. In the water treatment field, TRADEBE has carried out research projects for improving the elimination of ammonia from wastewater and studies for improving the elimination of organic matter. Furthermore, TRADEBE has experience in projects concerning nitrogen recovery systems and valorisation of wastes.



TACSA is a Spanish company with 25 years of experience, dedicated to organic coating of metal parts. Leader in its sectors, its mains activities are antioxidative protection by electrocoating process and topcoats by powder coating process. TACSA´s main clients come from automotive and other industries requiring high protection of their corrosion products.

The e-coating process requires huge quantity of high quality water in order to clean the metallic parts before being treated. The final quality of the process is highly correlated with the quality of the water used. We are currently investigating for sub-processes that could reduce the total net water consumption of our processes, reducing thus the generated wastes. So, it is of our outmost interest to improve the quality of the water reused and its compatibility with our industrial processes that uses organic treatments in which no bacteria are allowed. The present project is aligned with one of the TACSA´s two main strategies for the next years: to increase the efficiency of its productive processes while reducing their environmental impact.
